Overview

Dear Buckley Community,

The 2014 - 2015 school year was one characterized by innovation and growth. Buckley faculty members took advantage of more than 20 innovation grants, collaborating to build expertise, integrate disciplines, use technology creatively in the classroom, and update their teaching styles based on the latest in educational research. Classrooms were flipped, new artistic endeavors launched, and workshop approaches developed to help students generate their own educational experiences.

Our academic departments initiated new theatre, music, math, and science initiatives. More than 190 Buckley students sat for a variety of Advanced Placement exams. Students in our outstanding visual arts program earned 60 Scholastic Art Awards, while students in performing arts produced musicals, plays, concerts, and other performances. Buckley sports teams played in 12 league championship and 11 CIF playoff games. More than 40 clubs were active on campus to meet almost every interest. Our students participated in a variety of service projects, from creating supportive partnerships with other schools in the Los Angeles area to advocating for water conservation and working at local non-profits to fight hunger and homelessness. Buckley’s multiculturalism and inclusion efforts lead students, families, faculty, and staff to participate in compelling events, including engaging with guest speaker Allison Park, an expert on socioeconomics, status and class, and attending the National Association of Independent School’s People of Color and the Student Diversity Leadership Conferences in Indianapolis.

Continued growth in our programs is only possible because of the financial strength of our institution and the generosity of the entire Buckley community. Buckley enrolled 830 students and awarded financial aid to 16% of our student body. Our capacity for providing financial aid is directly related to our fundraising efforts each year. The Buckley community contributed more than $2 million to the school’s Annual Fund, exceeding our goal for the campaign. The Parents’ Association maintained its tradition of strong support, dedicating more than $280,000 to programs across our campus.

With much anticipation and excitement, we broke ground for The Center for Community and the Arts, a versatile space to hold community events, art shows, performances, and assemblies. When this building is completed towards the end of 2016, the Disney Pavilion will become a full-time gymnasium giving us more options to enhance our physical education and athletics programs for all divisions. Over the summer, we refurbished existing spaces, including the newly named Students Services and Library Building, which houses a modernized Robert Young Library, a college counseling suite, and world languages lab, as well as the Middle and Upper School administrative offices. A K-12 Admission office was added to our Lower School campus as a meeting place for new students and families, along with relocated Lower School administrative offices.

We continue to enhance our educational programs and our campus, because we want each Buckley student to find his or her own voice through deeply engaging experiences in academics, the arts, physical education, and ethical education. When this happens, inquisitive, energetic, and promising young people grow to become confident, responsible, and accomplished young adults. We are extremely grateful to have the unwavering support of our faculty, staff, families, alumni, and other friends in helping us achieve this goal year after year.
